Set up Google Analytics on your ND WordPress Blog

Google Analytics
Google Analytics is free!

Lots of people have asked about website analytics on the Notre Dame blog system.  Here’s a quick way to set it up for yourself.  The main thing you need to know is that you’ll need a Google Account first.  So if you don’t have one, set that up first.  Then follow the steps below.

  1. Go to google.com/analytics
  2. Click on Access Analytics
  3. Login using your Google Account email/password
  4. Click on the little gear to the far right.  Check out the image below to see where it is.

Add New Account to Google Analytics
You'll see this image after you click the Google Analytics Gear
  5. In the center will be a Add New Account – click that.
  6. Fill out the info like Your Blog Name, the website address, change the time to Eastern, let it share data to other Google products, and check the Terms and Conditions.
  7. The next page will then have the Tracking Code. It’s the UA- number.  Check out the image below.

You'll see the UA-Tracking Code at the top.
  8. Now go back to your blog and login.
  9. Click on Settings at the very bottom of the left hand navigation.
  10. Drop the UA code in and then click Update Google Analytics Settings.  If you can’t see Google Analytics, you might have to add the plugin.  If that is the case, then go to Plugins and click Activate on Google Analytics.

Click on Settings and then Google Analytics. This is where you'll add the UA number.
  11. You should be set. Go back to Google Analytics in a couple of days and you should be able to see your analytics.

It’s not too painful but if you are still having issues, you can contact me via my office number or email and we’ll figure it out.

  6. Great post on the Google Analytics setup steps! It is really important to create a separate Google Analytics account for each unrelated website you want to track, so your 5th step is really critical. A lot of people add different websites within the same account and this causes major problems.

Our company does Google Analytics training in Melbourne and one thing we cover which is important for anybody looking after a blog is to set up ‘site search’ reports so you can see what people search for within your blog. Read our post on how to setup site search reports for greater insights into what content people are looking for on your blog. You can then use these reports to identify potential content areas for your future posts.
